The Local Police Memorial at Woronora Memorial Park was the first in the state, aligned with the NSW State Memorial.

Uniformed police, ex-police officers, and their families were in attendance on Thursday 9th April 2015 to witness the official opening by NSW Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione APM.

This special Police Memorial was created to honour local officers killed whilst on duty within the Sutherland and St George region. The Police Commissioner was joined by the Minister of Police and Justice, The Hon. Troy Grant for what was his first official event as Deputy Premier and Minister of Police.

“It is with great pride I dedicate this memorial and honour the officers, whose names are inscribed, remembering their selfless sacrifice and courage. They will not be forgotten,” Commissioner Scipione said.

Those in attendance paid tribute to 11 officers killed in the three Local Area Commands (Sutherland, St George and Miranda) while on duty, and whose names are placed on this memorial. Their names appear alongside 13 other New South Wales police officers killed in the line of duty in other locations, and who now rest within our cemetery.

Those names appear next to a granite panel where the image of Saint Michael the Archangel is etched, standing as the guardian angel of our Police. There are also 2 colonial police officers who were killed by bush fire while on duty. They died in 1845, a date prior to the forming of the New South Wales Police Force in 1862. Their names appear on one of the two granite seats that sit within this precinct. The Local Police Memorial reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice these men and women, with consequent impact on their families.

Each year on 28th September, the eve of National Police Remembrance Day, a service is held at the memorial by the local Police community.
